Trans Alp 2010 Mountian Bike Race

The Transalp Mountain Bike Race is an international event that takes teams of two riders from Fussen in Germany across the Alps through Austria, Switzerland and finishing in Riva del Garda in Italy.  Known as the toughest Mountain Bike Race in the world every day involves climbs along dirt tracks, through forests and over several mountains.

David Hawkins, 29 now living in Birmingham and myself, Neil Wragg, 40 from Marlow completed the 8 Day Mountain Bike Stage Race across the Alps in 45 hours 24 minutes and 1.2 seconds for High Wycombe Cycle Club.

This put us into 182nd position in the open category (the category that happens to contain Olympic and World Champions, doh!) out of a total number of 550 teams entered from countries such as South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia, USA and Canada. Even Alaska and Costa Rica entered teams!
We improved our overall position after every stage each day even though legs were getting tired and everything else was getting sore. The day’s racing involved several Alpine passes at levels of up to 3,000 metres, all off road including the never ending Mortirolo and Stelvio which would take us higher than the road passes right over the summits in hail and freezing rain.

Most days however were at over 20% gradients on rocky tracks in over 30 degree heat and you could follow a line of sweat droplets up the climbs until you got to the snow and would then have to hike the bike on your shoulders over the top. One ascent we timed at 2 hours to go up and 13 minutes to descend, which didn’t seem fair!

Each of us expended over 36,000 calories per rider just during the riding in the 8 days of racing so as a weight loss plan it works quite well, however the celebratory meal at the end might have made up the difference.

The race was 600 kms long and involved climbing a total of 19,685 metres over the total 8 days of racing. You raced as a pair staying together all the time in order to ensure each others safety as the route was sometimes very dangerous and quite remote in the high Alps.

We couldn’t have done it without our hard working support crew, they had the tough job of driving the precarious mountain roads in a motorhome and then finding somewhere level to park near the finish each day!

It was a real working holiday for my dad and uncle so a huge thanks to them, it was a real team effort of four guys in a van doing the Italian Job!

Salzkammergutted!

Sunny and hot. The day before...

Neil Wragg competed in one of Europe’s toughest Mountain Bike Races at the weekend but whilst he was on form, the weather had other ideas…..

Hyperthermia was a reality for many competitors on the Austrian Salzkammergut MTB Trophy even though on the day before Saturday’s race it was 32 degrees and blue skies. It shows how quickly mountainous weather can be lethal and with most riders in summer racing kit the 114 kms mountain bike race was cancelled with two thirds of the field not even reaching the halfway point.

A freezing storm  had been in full effect since the night before and was now bringing snow and zero visibility to those riders reaching the mountain tops.

Results were published for all those riders who did reach the final checkpoint of the shortened race in the treacherous conditions.
Neil was the 2nd British rider and the 181st rider overall to get to the cancellation point out of 584.
1500 riders started the race at Bad Goisern but two thirds quit when body temperatures plummeted after the freezing rain at the start turned into snow over the initial 1400 metre summit.
“I wanted to continue but they wouldn’t let me, my plan was to ride the first half

conservatively so I was just getting warmed up!” said Neil. “Actually I wasn’t getting any warmer no matter how hard I rode so the organisers probably made a very wise decision for me”.

Neil Wragg is pictured here in the recent Army Cycling Mountain Bike Enduro Race.   Dry, dusty days in the saddle seem to be typical of 2009 and this race was no exception with all the racers finishing the 4 hour event looking like they had just emerged from the pits!

mountain biking in the club

High Wycombe CC has many members who are both recreational and competitive MTB riders. In fact many of our road and TT riders originally came from an MTB background.

In typical MTB stylee HWCC runs mountain bike rides as and when we feel like it!
We know the Chilterns well both on and off road and run mountain bike rides in the evening and weekends, just not on a regular basis like the Sunday morning club runs.   If you want to know when the next off-road ride or event is then join the club and stay in touch on the Message Board.   Regular off-roaders are Neil Wragg, Nick Calkin, Toby Cappell, Kev Holloway & Paul Morrissey so grab one of them if you want any help.

Alternatively our local bike shop and club supporter Cycle Care know all there is to know about riding off road around the Chilterns and might be able to hook you up with an organised ride.

Trail Break are a fantastic company, personally recommended and provide a great way to ride your bike, hassle free!   They organise various events such as way marked trail rides in great locations, navigator style bike orienteering events and cyclosportives.
