WEEKEND RACE RESULTS 17th AUG09:

Time Trials

Tuesday night at Weston-on-the-green airfield, two HWCC teams competed in the Bicester Millennium 4up 10TT. Placing 5th with a time of 21.56 was a team of riders which were, Clive Nicholls, James Norris, Gareth Batson & Dave Priem.  The winning team however, was Wycombe’s very own Dave Johnson, Steve Golla, Rob Fletcher & Chris Starling with a time of 20.44.

On wednesday evening HWCC took over the Whitewebbs 10. There were a lot of pb’s. Nick Calkin 21.57, Richard Davies 22.00, and Chris Starling 21.15. Dave Johnson and Greg Lewis also rode in some superb times but no personal bests! Their times were 20.48 and 21.56 respectively.

Last Saturday father and son duo Kev and Joe rode the 130 miles down to Weymouth for a
family holiday. While they were there they entered the
Weymouth CC 2-up time trial, with both of them on their road bikes.  With a 17 second late start, they still managed to blow the field away with a win with 9 seconds in hand over 2nd place!

Sportive:

On Sunday John Francis rode the Evans Cycles “Ride It” Cotswold Sportive. It was an 88 mile course which started out from Wotton under Edge on a rolling but not too hilly course. It took the riders west to the Severn Estuary then in an easterly direction towards Swindon.

The weather was great except for a strong headwind on the homeward leg. John returned to the HQ with a time of around 5 hrs 10mins (times to be confirmed when they go online later in the week)

Also, Ossie has written a full report on the Etape which you can find at:
www.cyclosport.org

If you scroll down the home page, its under the heading Brit Pack…

Extra news:

Robert Barrett competed the DB Max Duathalon at Castle Coombe  on Sunday having not run since April!

The circuit included a 5k run with a time of 29:28, a 21k bike in 45:23 and 3k run in 20:16. His total time including transitions was 1.36.52 placing him 16th.

WEEKEND RACE REPORT 02AUG09

WEEKEND RACE RESULTS 02AUG09

TIME TRIALS:

James Norris competed in the Mazda Triathlon on Saturday. This event takes place at the ExceL Exhibition Centre in London’s Docklands and is the largest triathlon in the world with over 13,000 competitors expected to participate in one or other of the events over a two-day period.  James was part of a team relay and represented them in the cycling event which was a 25 mile time trial.  Out of 400 competitors in the time trial, James placed an amazing 8th place.

This Sunday there were a few Wycombe riders taking part in the WLC 25TT starting at the ski slope near the Handy Cross roundabout. The only result I have on this is that Adam Topham places 5th in 54.14 just behind Ray Hughes, losing 4th place by only one second! It seems that this vital second may have been due to some mechanical issues that Adam was having when changing gears.  I believe that our boys scooped the team prize.

Going back to last weekend, Sunday saw Cliff Grant compete in the Veralum 25TT on the F1 course. He placed equal 4th vet on standard with a time of 61.34.

WEEKEND RACE REPORT 27JUL09

WEEKEND RACE REPORT 27TH JUL 09

TIME TRIALS:

Saturday saw Dave Johnson over at the Echelon 10TT.  Despite there being strong winds, he still placed 9th in a time of 21.45.

Sunday, Dave was out again at the Echelon 25 this time with a partner in crime Chris Starling! He placed another 9th in 56.28 with Chris coming a close 10th in 56.54.

Also on Sunday was our Hughendon Hilly! Ten riders turned up to brave the hills and the breezy conditions. Kevin Holloway was the overall winner and has claimed the trophy with a combined time of 1-49-30. He just beat Geoff Powell by 7 seconds who took 2nd place with 1-49-37. Joe Holloway was 3rd with a time of 1-57-19.

Sunday seemed to be the day for time trialling! Tom Rodda rode for the RAF CC in the Elmet CRC 12 hour TT. He clocked up 254.7 miles and placed 8th overall.

Over at the Chippenham & District 25 mile time trial a team of Wycombe riders competed in dry but very windy conditions.  The event was held on the U46/B on the A419 on the Cirencester - Swindon road. Another ladies club record went to Chrissy Radon who took 30
seconds from her own 25-mile time lowering the Club record to a very fast 56.23. Chrissy was a clear winner in the ladies field and was placed 19th in the field of 120 men.  Wycombe’s Adam Topham was 5th with a time 54.38.  There were good times from other
Wycombe riders with Greg Lewis clocking 59.41, Richard Davies 1.00.06 and Anna Holder 1.8.04.  The event winner was Jeff Jones from the host club  (Chippenham & District) in 51.04.

SPORTIVES

Ossie Assem, rode the Etape last week (mon 20th July).  Here is his own report:

This was a very tough mountainous 171kms route from Montelimar to Mont
Ventoux.

The first 149kms was punctuated with 5 climbs to ‘break riders in’,
before the uphill finish to Mont Ventoux, a brute of a 22km climb.

Officially the Mont Ventoux climb has a 7.6pct average, but with the last
6km at 6pct average and the first 5km at 4pct, that means that the
middle section is roughly 10km of 11pct average!

Add in 35 degree temperatures (taken in the shade) beating down on
riders in the largely shade less middle forested section, the
airlessness of the section, coupled with the relentlessness of the
climbing (there are no flat hairpins)…this paints a picture that
explains why pros over the years have feared the Ventoux like no other
mountain!

I rode this is in 7 hours 5 mins, with my split for Mont Ventoux 1 hr 49
mins.

All in all it was a fantastic day!!

WEEKEND RACE REPORT 20JUL09

WEEKEND RACE REPORT 20JUL09

TT

Thursday night a few of us headed over to Maidenhead to ride the Thicket 10 course. Just as we were about to start the heavens opened and down came the rain! Despite the dreadful weather conditions I rode the course as a two up with Stewart King in a time of 26.31 which wasn’t bad considering the conditions.  Also braving the torrential rain was Kevin Holloway 23.10, Nick Calkin 23.20, Joe Holloway 25.57.

Saturday, Gordon and Margaret  took Chrissy Radon to  Cambridge to ride the API Metro  Team Cambridge 25 mile TT on the E2/25  course. This course is renound to be very quick on the right day,  but strong westerly winds made it a tough day! Chrissy still managed to storm the 20 strong ladies field with an incredible win in 56.53 a winning margin of over one and half minutes.  This is yet another HWCC ladies record  – now  the 5th in a row in the last two months.

Richard Davies was also riding in the men’s event finishing with a time of 1.00.45. He was slightly disappointed with his time as he had blasted round the same course a few weeks ago in better conditions in 58 minutes!

Sunday Adam Topham came 3rd in Poole Wheelers 25 on a windy sporting course with an awesome time of 56:56. The event was won by  Dave Pickering in 56:35. It seems that Adam’s experimentation with higher cadence paid off and he went home really pleased with his performance!

Also on Sunday a few Wycombe riders braved the weather and early start to ride the MHCA 100. Chris Starling and Chris Greig thought better of it and were both a DNS although Chris Starling did grace the club run with his presence instead.  Dave Johnson came in with a time of 4.1.07 securing him 4th place with Nick Calkin hot on his heels with a 4.22. Duncan Smith and Kevin Holloway both did not finish. The event was won in 3.51.49 by Jenkinson.

MTB

Report from Neil Wragg:

Hyperthermia was a reality for many competitors on the Austrian Salzkammergut MTB Trophy even though on the day before Saturday’s race it was 32 degrees and blue skies.  It shows how quickly mountainous weather can be lethal and with most riders in summer racing kit the 114 kms mountain bike race was cancelled with two thirds of the field not even reaching the halfway point.

A freezing storm had been in full effect since the night before and was now bringing snow and zero visibility to those riders reaching the mountain tops.

A comprehensive report on the conditions and how the race went for Neil Wragg will follow but the results were published for all those riders who did reach the final checkpoint of the shortened race in the treacherous conditions.

He was the 2nd British rider (3 minutes behind a pro team Merida rider) and the 181st rider overall to get to the cancellation point out of 584.

1500 riders started the race at Bad Goisern but two thirds quit when body temperatures plummeted after the freezing rain at the start turned into snow over the initial 1400 metre summit.

“I wanted to continue but they wouldn’t let me, my plan was to ride the first half conservatively so I was just getting warmed up!” said Neil.  “Actually I wasn’t getting any warmer no matter how hard I rode so the organisers probably made a very wise decision for me”.

TRACK

Stewart King let his prescence be know at Palmer Park on Monday night, placing 4th in both the Hare and Hound and also the Devil.

SPORTIVES

John Francis entered the Anthony Maynard Sportive on Sunday. This event was organised by Reading Cycling Club in memory of Anthony Maynard who was fatally injured whilst on a club run just outside Henley last year. Starting from Theale it covered 190km and 2600m of climbing over the Berkshire Downs. John finished the event in 7 hours 17 minutes achieving himself a Silver award.

WEEKS RACE REPORT 13JUL09

WEEKS RACE REPORT 13JUL09

Time Trial

Wednesday evening myself and Stewart King were over near Pinewood Studios at the Bath Road TT. Stewart in good form placed 2nd with 22.25. I however am still trying to get back into racing again so produced a not so spectacular time of 27.13!

Thursday night Stewart took himself off to the fairly flat roads of Lincolnshire with the hope of winning the Alford Wheelers 10TT.  The weather was against the riders and after battling the torrential rain he finished in 25.09 placing 6th overall!

Closer to home, myself and a few of our Wycombe TT superstars were at Great Missendon for the Hillingdon Tri’s 10TT.  A headwind all the way out made it a tough ride for all involved and we welcomed the aid of a tail wind after the turn, assisting us back up the by-pass. I’m pleased to say I actually caught my minute man, finishing in 27.51! Dave Johnson won the event in 22.07. Chris Starling was third in 22.35 Also riding was Nick Calkin in 23.16 and Mark Wakeley in 26.36.

Saturday saw the dynamic duo became the three amigos with Dave Lancaster joining Richard Davies and Greg Lewis to try out the E2/10.
There was a lively debate in the car on the way up to Cambridge about how fast this course can be. Is it faster than the P613 or the F20/10 in Hertfordshire? Being on the A11 by Newmarket the course is very exposed. Greg’s experience of the E2/10 from May had born this out with a strong Southerly breeze making conditions very difficult.
It certainly looked like a good day when leaving
High Wycombe. However, on arrival at the HQ there was a moderate southerly breeze blowing. The locals who had earlier start times commented the course was not at its quickest.
Dave Lancaster showed his improving form with a 23.49. Richard Davies came home in a 23.08 and last of the Wycombe riders to start Greg Lewis scored a 21.52.

Sunday was the WLC 50TT. A windy morning on a tough course saw Dave Johnson win the event in an outstanding 1.55.50, Chris Starling also on top form in second place with 1.56.47 and Chrissy Raddon third in 2.00.07.

Track

Stewart King was flying the HWCC flag again on Friday night at Welwyn. He came 4th in the 10 lap scratch claiming another point and 5th in the devil out of 45 starters which was very exciting and another good achievement this time only inches off another point. He went on to then place 6th in the block handicap, finally finishing in the bunch in the 10 mile with a time of 22.04.

Monday night Kev and Stewart were racing at Palmer Park, Reading. In the ten lap scratch both our boys finished in the bunch.
The next event saw Wycombe’s Malcolm Freeman as the Derny driver for both Stewart and Kevin placing them both 2nd in their heats.  Stewart managed to get into the final as he had the fastest 2nd place time. Unfortunately, despite his best efforts, he didn’t obtain any points.
The final event of the night saw Kevin finishing in the bunch again, this time in the 10km.

Sportives

John Francis returned last Thursday from the French Alps having completed the Marmotte last weekend. Around 7,000 riders took part and set off in three groups.

John, luckily, was in the first group and sitting comfortable only 20 metres from the front. Fresh legs meant that the climb to the Col du Glandon was not too much trouble, although the descent soon proved to be very tricky and technical and as John did not have the suicidal speed of many of the riders on the descent, they soon began to pour past him.

John then tucked in behind a string of riders to the next climb to the Col du Telegraph. At 12K and 7% it was a constant slog with no relief and after a dip down into Valloire it was time for the main event, Galibier!

From Plan Lachat it’s 10K of hell. You can see the col, perched up in the clouds and each pedal stroke is a real effort.  After cresting the top it’s almost 50K of downhill to the foot of Alpe D’huez, when after rounding the mythical 21 hairpins the finish came not a moment too soon.

John finished in 10 hours 31 minutes and 59 seconds, enough to give him a Silver in his age group.

On Saturday Marion Freeman took part in the Family Cycle Race held at
Oakley Village, part of the Oakley Village Day. She placed a fantastic 5th out of 60 riders.  The first 4 riders were teenage boys, the winner being a paperboy from Oakley who rides up to Brill every day.

WEEKEND RACE REPORT 06TH JULY09

TIME TRIALS:

Tuesday evening, Dave Lancaster, Greg Lewis and Richard Davies headed off to the F20/10 course to take part in the White Webbs CC evening league.  On what looked set to be a fast night for them, Richard Davies steamed around producing his third fastest ten time of 22.16.  Greg managed to sneak under the 22 minute mark with an awesome time of 21.44 taking of 9 seconds from his PB and Dave Lancaster achieved one of his best times of the year with 24.01.

The dynamic duo Greg and Richard headed off to yet another event on Saturday, this time with Dave Johnson making up the time trialling trio! Gusty, south westerly breeze did not put them putting out yet more good times at the Las Vagas

Institute of Sport 10 on the U47 at Cirencester. DJ achieved his best 10 time in two years with an outstanding 21.19; clearly the Sally Roe diet is having the right effect!  Richard Davies crossed the line in exactly 23 minutes whilst Greg produced his fourth fastest 10 of the year with a 22.34.

Dave Lancaster and Cliff Grant made the journey to Cambridge to ride the Shaftsbury CC Middle Markers 25TT with high hopes of going under the hour.  Unfortunately, the strong south westerly breeze was against them and considering the conditions they were both pleased with their times of, Cliff 62.42 and Dave 63.38.

Tracy J - Record Breraker?

Tracy J - Record Breraker?

Thursday last week saw a few Wycombe riders out and about at events. Myself and Ralph Dadswell took the tandem trike up to

Norfolk to race in a 15 mile event.  Although we initially thought the balmy night would make it pretty still conditions we were soon proved wrong once we got onto dual carriageway and were hit by quite a head wind to the turn! Despite this and the fact that I haven’t raced in 5 weeks and hardly even been on the bike we kicked out a fairly respectable time of 35.33, possibly securing a new national record!

Over in Great Missenden a few of our boys did the Hillingdon Tri’s 10 TT.  Stewart King 24.55, Mark Wakeley 26.13, Chris Starling 22.32 and Dave Johnson 21.52.

Sunday Tall Chris Greig tackled the 12 hour!  We are very proud of him as he beat last year by 6 miles, clocking up 242 miles despite battling against the wind!  He pipped Ralph Dadswell by 2 miles, Ralph clocking up 240 miles.  Chris wants me to mention a big thanks to Colin Fury for assisting him during his 12 hour ride and also to Sally Roe for her dietary advice!

 TRACK:

Our resident trackie was at Welwyn again on Friday night.  The ten mile race saw Stewart wheel sucking in fourth place with Ploughman Craven’s Tony Gibb leading the bunch.  Despite pulling his foot out of his cleat and coasting the last three hundred yards, dashing any hopes of a sprint finish but still completing the 10 miles in 22.30! He also came seventh in both the ten lap scratch and the pursuit, just missing out on some points!

 ROAD:

James Norris Tough Tour of Wales

James Norris Tough Tour of Wales

This week it’s a report from HWCC’s James Norris on the Tour of Wales:

Arrived safely. Digs are good. Food is good. Team mates are ready to rock and roll. 61st from 84 today. Gave it full gas but not great. 1min 23secs down on the leader. Let’s see how the next 4 days go…

Late Update: central team finished 8th from 21 teams in the team TT, 49 secs from the winners. Good result.  Road race in the morning was a tough hilly 85k. I finished at the front of second group. Overall 12 mins down on G.C. Tom crouch is 5th overall 1min down and in the polka dot jersey tomorrow. But I did get a leg massage for 40 mins tonight.

Today’s stage in the Brecon beacons.105k with a 16% climb thrown in. Four laps with the finish at the top. I was dropped each time after the summit and managed to claw back to the bunch (with the other sprinters) each time. Then we had the welsh rain on the last lap. Everyone soaked, unable to see and no brakes! Our team leader Tom was strong enough to ride across to the break and get 2nd on the stage. I stayed with the bunch and finished strong, not losing any time for the team’s overall time. That was my toughest race this year. Tomorrow’s climb is 4 miles long! Bring it on!

Breaking news: My team leader is in the climber’s jersey tomorrow and in second place 19secs down. The team must look after him, he could do well…  I’m mid-field in 53rd 14mins down. It was our team TT result that meant Tom could stay in contention.

Stage 4 was tough but no surprise there. 80k and 4 times up a long climb. Over the stage I averaged 40kph+! Finished in 41st place 43 seconds behind the winner. Overall I’m now in 55th place.

12:14 down on the yellow jersey. But the team is in 5th place out of 21 teams. Tomorrow is longer and steeper! A real sort out – 105kms, just got to stay up at the front. Feet up and will get a massage in 40 mins, then dinner. Let’s have it…

Final result: Tom won ‘king of the mountains’ jersey and placed second overall @ 19secs. Due to the team not letting any breaks go away on the final stage. I placed 51st on G.C still beating over 30 riders. If I hadn’t lost 8 mins on the 1st day I would have been much higher. Central region team was 5th overall only 3mins down. 500k and over 10hours racing in 5 days. Time for a rest day.

Thanks for all your support. James.

MTB:

MTB Team Neil Wragg & Paul Morrissey

MTB Team Neil Wragg & Paul Morrissey

A successful day for HWCC mountain bikers.  Both Neil Wragg and Paul Morrissey raced on private MOD land surrounded by soldiers and the sound of gunfire in the  ‘Are You Tough Enough?’ MTB Endurance Race organised by the Army Cycling Union.

The course was a fast, flowing technical loop around the private MOD land near the Deepcut Barracks. Yet another hot, dry day led to very dusty racing with all competitors finishing the race looking like they had just emerged from a coal pit!

Paul Morrissey stood on the podium to receive the bronze medal in the Men’s Vets 2 hour race whilst Neil Wragg achieved 4th place in the Open Men’s 4 hour category finishing the 48 miles in 4hrs 33minutes.

SPORTIVES:

The Wantage Sunday Sportive saw Greg out again this time Kev Holloway. This was an 84 mile Sportive with 1200 metres of climbing.  In true Holloway style Kev blitzed around the course deploying his immense climbing abilities to finish in 1st place in 4 hours 15 minutes.  This meant he had an average speed of 19.75 mph!!

Keep your reports coming in…..
