WEEKEND RACE REPORT 28SEP09

WEEKEND RACE REPORTS 28 SEP 09

TIME TRIAL:

At the weekend, Wycombe’s Adam Topham rode in the Team Swift 25TT near Derby on the A25/11. Adam did a good ride with a time of 52:27 but isn’t sure where he placed. Matthew Bottrill won the event with a 48:59!

On Saturday out in Worcester on a rolling, Dave Johnson rode a 10 mile TT
course on the A38. He recorded a time of 22.05 placed 6th overall and was 2nd vet
on age standard +5.42.

Great Missenden on Sunday saw riders from HWCC and the Westerley compete in an Interclub 25 mile TT competition. Unfortunately I don’t have any actual results apart from that we won with Steve Golla our second claim member being the fastest rider with Dave Johnson hot on his heels in second place. Stewart King also did a PB on his road bike with 1.02.59.

SPORTIVE:

On Sunday, Andrew Mullis and Laurie Philpot rode the 150km Essex Road Club’s Autumn Leaves Sportive. This was Laurie’s first sportive. Although there were no medals on offer, Laurie set himself a time of 5 hours 30 in which to complete the hilly course and finished in precisely that time. Andrew finished in 5:14.

MTB:

On Sunday, Nick Calkin and Rick Fetherston took part in the Forest of Dean MTB enduro. The event was organised by the Royal Dean Forest CC and consisted of a tough 40 mile route through the forest. With technical climbs and descents, coupled together with miles of single-track this course tested each rider’s ability. Both of our guys were riding in the Expert Category which was the first group off, together with the Masters Category. The uphill start suited Rick and he managed to keep with the lead bunch for two of the four laps before easing off the pace a touch and dropping back a little. Nick had to fight hard to keep with a fast group, which slowly thinned out as riders dropped off. The final lap saw Nick riding on his own. They both finished in very respectable times with Rick in 10th place in 3:15 and Nick not far behind finishing just 27 minutes later placing 26th overall.

TRACK:

Monday night saw two of our boys back at Palmer Park track flying the HWCC flag! Stewart King and Kevin Holloway both raced in the Hare and Hound, Points race, Unknown distance, 500 metre sprint and 20km. Kevin Holloway placed a fantastic 3rd in the 20k gaining some well deserved points.

ROAD:

No news.

WEEKEND RACE REPORT 21SEPTEMBER09

WEEKEND RACE REPORT 21ST SEPTEMBER 09

TIME TRIALS:

Chrissy Radon produced yet another stunning time trial performance on Sunday when she returned a time of 1.54.12 in the Severn RC 50 mile time trial slicing a massive 6 minutes and 05 seconds from her own club record set back in June. This is one of the fastest 50 mile time trials recorded by a woman in the UK this year.

Chrissy was the fastest lady by many minutes on the U46 course west of Swindon, but far more remarkably is the fact that she finished in 10th place overall in the field of 90 riders which included some top men. She is now waiting to see if she has gone into the lead in the Women’s National Two distance Best British Table which covers 25 and 50 mile time trial times. Adam Topham is currently lying in 6th place in the Men’s list,

Elsewhere, in the 6th round of the Rudy Project national circuit series held at Nasby Northampton Richard Davies was placed 3rd in the Disability category with a time of 53.26 behind winner and Olympic medallist Simon Richardson. Dave Johnson finished in 6th place as a veteran on actual time and was 6th fastest on age target with a time of 48.27

In the West London Combine 10 mile TT held on the Great Missenden – Wendover course Geoff Powell was the fastest overall with 22.52. Chris Starling came home in 5th with 24.09, Peter Lawrence 9th 24.19, Phil Crouch 26.19. Ken Powell 28.11 and Rosie Osborne 28.28.

ROAD RACE:

On Sunday, both James Norris and Gareth Batson took a trip to Birmingham to compete in the Solihull CC Road Race. This was a 60 mile 2/3/4 Cat race on a very fast course, taking in some main A-roads.
With the weather on their side over 80 riders lined up at the start. There was a couple of early attacks which didn’t amount to anything and unfortunately after only 2 laps, Gareth had to pull out of the race.

James continued to fly the HWCC flag without his partner in crime and 25 miles into the race attacked with a Raleigh Team rider to catch a break of three.

The five of them started to work together and managed to stay away for a good 20 minutes but the long straight roads held no hiding place for them and they were soon swallowed back into the chasing peleton.

It wasn’t long before another break formed including a rider from Cycling Bargains Team, managing to stay away till 500 metres to the finish where they were caught on the line.

With an average speed of over 25 mph the race came to a close with a bunch sprint seeing James placing a very credible 23rd!

WEEKEND RACE REPORT 14TH SEPTEMBER 2009

WEEKEND RACE REPORT 14th SEPTEMBER 09

TIME TRIALS:

On Saturday both Gareth Batson and Adam Topham braved the windy conditions to ride the Weyhill weekend on the P613 course at Andover. The cross head out and cross tail back didn’t slow either of them down too much, both producing outstanding PB’s. Gareth came in with a 21.43 whilst Adam, although hoping to break 20 did an awesome time of 20.05. The event was won by Alan Cook in 19.36.

On Sunday Adam rode the same course this time it was a 25TT. If it wasn’t for an 8 minute late start and then his chain coming off he would have done about 53:20.

Also on Sunday, Chris Greig, Greg Lewis and Anna Holder were at the Ickneild Road Club Compomotive Wheels. Chris produced a PB by 4 seconds with a very good time of 22.15. Greg Lewis did a time of 23.18 and Anna flying the flag for the HWCC ladies in a commendable time of 25.15.

ROAD RACE:

James Norris represented Wycombe on Sunday in the John and Dulcie Walker Memorial Road Race. This was meant to be on the road but the Hertfordshire police wouldn’t permit it so the event was re-located to Hillingdon Circuit making it an hour plus 5 lap race.

From the gun, three riders were off the front and managed to keep the peleton at bay for about 20 minutes. James along with some help from the Gregario’s worked together to catch a break and half an hour into the race James attacked, staying away for a lap until the bunch swallowed him up.

He managed to position himself at the front and stayed there and, with two other riders made yet another break with 10 minutes to go. James turned himself inside out to keep the three of them away from the main bunch, knowing this was his last race of the season and wanting to put in a good performance.

With 6 laps to go they were still away working together in through and off style. 3 laps to go and another rider joined the break and 2 laps to go saw another rider join making them a strong group of five!

In the final lap things were hotting up when one of the riders kicked on the back straight. James chased him down and caught him on the finishing straight. Adrenaline was pumping as the two riders battled against each other for the win. With only metres to the line James put down full gas to a very exciting photo finish!

After the video was assessed James was placed 2nd by only a rim depth in what was his best race and best result of the season.

SPORTIVE:

Richard Wise and Ken Powell completed the Ronde Picardie Senior sportive in France. This was a 137km route which on the day was very windy making it tougher than they would have liked. They both achieved silver medals, Keith Powell in 4.35 and Richard Wise in 4.59. Kev Holloway did the Master 180km event but I don’t have any results for him.

WEEKEND REPORT 24AUG09

WEEKEND RACE RESULTS 24th AUGUST 09:

TIME TRIALS:

Thursday night both Stewart King and Bob Lambert headed over to the Maidenhead and District CC 10TT at Fifield.  On not a particularly fast course and with a headwind they both did respectable times.  Stewart placed 11th in 25.18 and Bob placed 17th in 26.16.  The event was won overall in 22.48 by AW Cycles Neil Cooper.

A record breaking spree was the order of the weekend for one group of Club members.  On Saturday Chrissy Radon won the North Hants Ladies 25 mile time trial in an almost unbelievable time of 54 minutes and 6 seconds. This time makes her the 8th fastest woman of all time over 25 miles in the UK, an absolutely stunning achievement that marks Chrissy as a very special athlete.  This ride on the H25/8 course at Farnham was another Club record for Chrissy blitzing her previous mark of 56.23 by a substantial margin.

On Saturday in the Team Sanjan 10TT Greg Lewis recorded 23.30 and Dave Johnson in 21.29.

On Sunday morning in South Wales in the Hirwain 25 mile time trial, a team of our lads went on a recording breaking and personal best frenzy.  Adam Topham led the group home with a stunning time of 50.57, a PB by 1.28 placing him 5th.  This is also a double club record as it broke the men’s senior record held by Neil Coventry since 1993 and set new veterans actual record previously held by Dave Johnson.

Close on his heels was Dave Johnson with a 53.01, Chris Starling 54.54 (PB), Nick Calkin 56.50 (PB), Richard Davies 57.08 (PB), Cliff Grant 57.57 (PB).

The aggregate team for Adam, Dave and Chris was a new senior men’s team record of 2.38.52. The aggregate team time for Adam, Dave and Nick was a new veteran’s actual team record of 2.40.48.  Staggeringly Adam’s time put his name against four new club records.

The event was won overall by Hutch in 46.01 which was 4 seconds outside of his competition record and was an amazing 4 minutes ahead of Jeff Jones who placed second.

Also on Sunday, Chris Greig braved the heat and strong winds to ride the 12 hour. He clocked up 228 miles.
